SPACE August 2025 (No. 693) 

 

If you find yourself drawn at first glance to the works of aoa architects (principal, Suh Jaewon) and KHYarchitects (principal, Kim Hyoyoung), it is likely a response to the distinctiveness of their forms. What¡¯s cute draws you in, what¡¯s intriguing makes you stop, and what¡¯s unfamiliar gives you pause.¡å1 These forms may appear trivial at first, yet they possess a clear and persuasive power, so much so that many are pulled into the stories that lie within; stories in form. In their own ways, both architects are speaking about the roles and methodologies of architecture. Let¡¯s take a look inside their recently completed works, The Petit House, Cheongun (2024) and Residence for Mr. P (2025).

Suh Jaewon
Suh Jaewon is a licensed architect and the principal of aoa architects. His major works include Jeongdong Seoul Citizen¡¯s Future School, Gangneung HOJI. He received the Korean Young Architect Award in 2017 and was selected as a recipient of the TSK Critic Fellowship in 2021. In the fall of 2024, he participated as an invited artist in the ¡®Mês da Arquitetura da Maia 2024¡¯ exhibition in Porto, Portugal. In spring 2025, he gave a public lecture at The Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL, in London. His publications include The Metagame of Architecture (2014) and In Search of Lost Korean Houses (2024). He currently teaches design studios at Seoul National University.
Kim Hyoyoung
Kim Hyoyoung studied architecture at Dankook University and Kyonggi University Graduate School of Architecture. After gaining diverse experience at the ateliers of several young architects, he founded KHYarchitects in 2015. He approaches architecture with an empathic sensitivity to the context in which it is produced. He identifies and expresses the underlying character of each situation, posing questions that link architecture with the present moment.
