SPACE October 2026 (No. 707)

The Gangnam area consists of roughly 400 × 600 metre blocks. High-rise commercial buildings line the main boulevards, while compact, densely packed low-rise residential neighbourhoods sit directly behind them. LAYR Cheongdam mediates between the grand scale of Dosan-daero and the intimate scale of daily life in the residential neighbourhood behind it. On its rear side, the building mass is segmented and stacked three-dimensionally to match the scale and variety of adjacent low-rise buildings. This not only reduces the building’s perceived scale but also generates 28 distinct residential layout types and terraces.

Park Heechan co-founded Urban Agency with Henning Stüben, Andrew Griffin, and Maxime Laroussi. Based in Copenhagen and Dublin, Urban Agency is an international design practice working across architecture, urbanism, and landscape in Europe, Asia, North America, and Africa. The practice explores how architecture can strengthen relationships between people, places, and the city. Notable works include Kalvebod Waves, an urban waterfront project in Copenhagen; Lille Langebro, a new pedestrian and cycle bridge in Copenhagen; Metzeschmelz, an 85-hectare masterplan for the redevelopment of a former steelworks site in Luxembourg; Brighten Yeouido, a residential complex in Seoul; and the masterplan for the Jeonbang-Ilshin Textile Industrial Site in Gwangju. Park published Relational City (2024), a book exploring the relationship between Danish society, the city, and the people who inhabit it.
