SPACE June 2026 (No. 703)
The rose, a symbol of Jungnang-gu, is far more than simply the subject of a local festival serving as an identifying marker that unites the community. This senior centre transforms the symbolism of the rose into an architectural experience, presenting itself as a key urban regeneration hub where senior welfare and local community life can coexist. Rather than presenting the rose as a visual image, it is interpreted here architecturally as a spatial experience. The ¡®Rose Path¡¯ and exterior stairways, arranged in response to sunlight conditions, become everyday promenades where residents can observe the growth cycle of plants. In particular, the double-skin façade composed of aluminium louvers and steel wires establishes an ecological system in which climbing roses intertwine with and grow along the building¡¯s envelope. Even during seasons when the roses are not in bloom, the light flowing through the louvers enriches the character of the façade, while the beige-toned long brick tiles respond softly to the surrounding residential context. The internal circulation reflects the daily rhythms of its elderly users and the principles of barrier-free design. Mediated by the presence of roses, this space functions as a sustainable shared hub that will endure and reinforce the identity of the neighbourhood.
