SPACE April 2026 (No. 701)

Gwangju Mudeung Library, Gwangju¡¯s regional representative library for over 40 years, is entering a functional transition with the upcoming opening of a new regional representative library. This project reconfigures a 132m2 area created by relocating parts of the underused first floor digital resource room to the second floor. Given the constraints of public projects, such as a limited budget and tight construction schedule, the design focused on shifting the method of production rather than creating new forms. The space was constructed by assembling prefabricated modular components produced in a factory and expanding them on-site. A repetitive structure based on 330mm and 345mm modules organises elements such as bookshelves into a single system, establishing a cohesive spatial order. This modular system allows components to be rearranged as needed, adapting to future spatial changes. Translucent acrylic panels with a paper-like texture mediate the various programmes, gently delineating the flow of light and sight. This project pursues spatial density and flexibility through assembly and reuse within a small-scale public renovation.
