SPACE June 2026 (No. 703)

District unit planning shapes an urban order, and the Gimhae Yulha District 2 is characterised by a homogeneous urban landscape. This house is situated within this order, yet resists becoming identical to it. Rather than relying on decorative façades, the architecture constructs its identity through sectional and plan-based strategies. The ground floor, designed as a neighbourhood commercial facility which directly engages with the city, draws movement and scenery into the interior through its transparent frontage. The residential spaces above are organised around a shared space that penetrates east to west and is at the centre of daily life. A panoramic window in the kitchen facing the waterfront maximises horizontal views, while the exposed gable roof vertically elevates the space, creating spatial tension. On the western side, a cement block screen filters views from neighbouring buildings while still allowing light and air to pass through. Externally, the contrast between exposed concrete and white stucco maintains a restrained architectural expression without competing with the surrounding context. This house accepts its context while refusing to be absorbed by it. Its identity emerges not through formalities, but through the way space itself is organised.
