DamDam is a compact house for a couple, their twins, and two cats, designed with solid exterior walls to ensure privacy on a small site surrounded by taller buildings. Working within the constraints imposed by the parking layout, the functions of each floor were carefully separated and circulation was precisely planned to maximise interior usability. The living room on the first floor is set at a lowered level, while a double-height window and a small garden on the east side of the structure allow the interior and exterior to flow naturally into each other. The void in front of the window promotes sectional communication between floors, and the cats often observe the family¡¯s daily life from the second floor balustrade. Ma Seungbum
Ma Seungbum is a U.S.‒licensed architect (AIA) and Founding Director of Studio SMA. He holds degrees from Columbia University and Seoul National University, and is at present an Assistant Professor at Hongik University, leading a studio that explores architecture, interiors, furniture, objects, and installations to enrich everyday life through thoughtful design.
Kim Hanjoong
Kim Hanjoong studied Architecture at Seoul National University and gained experience at KYWC architects. Since 2017, he has been operating a basement-workshop and ground architects. He is interested in the smaller-scale, and adopts a working attitude that places greater value on the individual as opposed to the whole. He believes that furniture, interior space, architecture, and cities are continuous; he¡¯s working on that.
