Incheon International Airport Cargo Lounge was designed to provide essential convenience facilities for cargo terminal workers, a need that has steadily grown since Incheon International Airport opened in 2001. Cafeterias, lounges, restrooms, and convenience stores, as well as outdoor spaces where workers could sit, rest, and smoke, were required. In response, a series of simple rectangular block buildings were envisioned. We focused on the in-between and outdoor spaces that would naturally emerge through their placement. We were drawn to the paradoxical image of the rigid mechanical architecture of the airport and cargo terminal transformed into spaces of rest. The wide spans, lightweight structures, and semi-outdoor spaces which were originally designed for cargo planes and forklifts, offer a sense of openness and leisure time. The emotional starting point of this project was the desire to realise these structures with even greater sense of lightness and to use unadorned walls.
