On Apr. 13, Hwaseong Culture & Tourism Foundation announced YEONHEUN by Adjaye Associates (Principal, David Frank Adjaye) as the winning entry of the 2026 Jeongok Port 1090 Plinth Public Art Project.

This competition is considered as one of the first projects of MARS WEST International Project. Last February, in addition to the winning team Adjaye Associates, the committee invited five different designers including Jean Michel Wilmote (Principal, Wilmotte & Associés), MVRDV (Co-Principals, Winy Maas, Jacob van Rijs and Nathalie de Vries), Cho Byoungsoo (Principal, BCHO Partners) and Wang Kwang Hyun to participate in this competition. Under the competition¡¯s main theme, ¡®Beyond the Frame¡¯, the invited participants submitted their creative proposals.

The winning entry, YEONHEUN takes the form of waves generated by the movement of the tide as its formative motif. More specifically, a series of semicircular walls of varying heights and arcs are arranged to create a space where visitors can appreciate the environment of Jeongok Port. According to the jury¡¯s comments, the work elevates the interaction between seawater and mudflats into a form of art, based on an in-depth analysis of the site environment.

In terms of materiality and methodology, Ajaye Associate used rammed earth to cast curvature structure walls. This approach offers various beneficial aspects, especially sustainability. For example, the use of local materials can minimise carbon dioxide emission. Hwaseong Culture & Tourism Foundation plans to proceed with the installation on a project budget of half a billion KRW.
