From June 24 to July 6, Yun Park’s solo exhibition ‘Fragments of Babel’ was held at Post Territory Ujeongguk. The artist has been exploring the characteristics of creative acts based on artificial intelligence (AI) and presenting a multidimensional concept of art. Following the previous solo exhibition ‘Digital Undercommons’ (2023), this exhibition expands the discussion on the combination of design and AI. From the perspective that views ‘communication as translation’, Park uses various programmes as a means of communication beyond traditional language and explores how generative AI intervenes in translation between media. The exhibition begins with an auditory stimulus: as visitors enter the exhibition hall, they are greeted by a low and high buzzing sound. People follow these unfamiliar sounds as they walk, encountering wooden sculptures, fragmented images, three-dimensional wall hangings and screens comprised of hundreds of layers, videos, and 3D-printed sculptures. And by the end of the exhibition, visitors realise that the installation works and the sounds that they’ve been hearing are all various forms of ‘translations’ derived from a single data source. As such, the artist presents a concept called ‘Multi-Dimensional Art’ through the process of selecting, editing, and arranging the generated outcomes according to their ambition. It is still debatable whether AI can expand the possibilities of artistic creation. However, it is evident that this exhibition accurately captures the surrounding phenomena and how it expands the realms of interpretation and communication through technology.
