On July 2, PETRICHOR ARCHITECTURE (principal, Jo Seongrae)¡¯s Placid Yard was picked as the winning design for the ¡®Busan Young Architect Pavilion Competition in the 2024 Busan International Architecture Festival¡¯ planned by Busan International Architecture Festival organising committee. This competition was organised to discover young architects under 50 years of age based in Busan, offer locals an opportunity to appreciate the creative potential of pavilion architecture, and create architectural sculpture on show during the festival. The winning project, which will be built over the course of three months starting from this Oct. at the 300m  central plaza in front of the Busan Cultural Center¡¯s main theatre, is expected to synergise with various architectural and non-architectural elements of the upcoming Busan International Performing Arts Market event. Six out of the eleven participating teams were selected for review presentations. The examining review was conducted by Shin Byoungyoon (professor, Dong-eui University), Kim Hyunsu (co-principal, eSou Architects), Shin Juyoung (co-principal, moc architects), Lee Jeonghoon (principal, JOHO Architecture), and Lim Kitack (professor, Bukyong National University). Placid Yard is a design that taps into the varied potential of the plaza which used to be just a buffer zone for buildings. The design was well-received for responding to its surrounding context while capturing the spontaneity of encounters and events that epitomises a plaza. Billet by architect-K (principal, Lee Kichul) and a submission from U.GA Architects (principal, Yu Daewoo) were also selected as runner-up and notable work of distinction respectively. From the total prize sum of 180 million KRW, the winning submission receives 100 million KRW for design and construction expenses.
