SPACE August 2023 (No. 669)

On June 16, the Incheon Metropolitan City unveiled the results of the International Design Competition for Incheon New City Hall. In response to the aging of the existing government building and the increased administrative demand due to the rapid growth of the city, the new building is expected to serve as a public space for citizens and serve as a step towards resolving the imbalance between the old downtown and the new city centre. The winning design was ¡®Integrated Government Office, Overlapped Park¡¯, designed by HAEAHN Architecture (principal, Kim Taeman) + SANGJI Architecture (principal, Han Byeongik) + CHUNGIL Architecture (principal, Kim Hakseong). The building creates an intensive operational environment by functionally integrating the old city hall and the new city hall, while enhancing their public character through the design of the lower floors with six gardens and a complex cultural space. With a gross floor area of 84,417m2 and a project cost of 284.8 billion won, the new city hall, which will be located in the parking lot on the east side of the existing building, is scheduled to begin construction in 2025 and be completed in Dec. 2027.
