Winning proposal of Design Competition for Convenience Support Facilities in the North Cargo Terminal Area ©KimNam Architects
On Feb. 3, Incheon International Airport Corporation unveiled the blueprints for a new convenience support facility to be built in the north cargo terminal area. The facility will make up for the lack of space for public amenities due to the increase in logistics workers and warehouse tenants. There are two project sites, and since the existing site and its surroundings are a parking lot, it was critical to consider the vehicle movement within the layout. Another key point of attention was the design for access, perception, convenience, and external rest areas. The winning firm, KimNam Architects (co-principals, Kim Jinhyu, Nam Hojin), created a large canopy to provide shade to signal a rest area. Below, the buildings are arranged freely, and a staircase connects to the roof terrace. The jury praised the canopy for its ¡®design integration and seasonal planning¡¯, and the ground floor exterior space and roof terrace for their ¡®flexible and functional composition¡¯. The future amenity support facilities for the north cargo terminal area will consist of two single-storey, 500m2 buildings following a six-month design process.
