On Oct. 20, 2022, Gangwon Provincial Office of Education announced the results of the design competition for Green Smart School of Ganseong Elementary School. This competition promoted the creation of a new school that would respond to changes in society and to the school education system in the future. The reconstruction of a main building of 2,337.93㎡ with three floors or less is required in the site of Ganseong Elementary School, 20 Ganseong-ro 39beon-gil, Ganseong-eup, Goseong-gun, Gangwon-do. The winner, tedoori architects (principal, Ahn Jongjin), proposed a plan to situate educational facilities linked to existing school facilities within the natural topography, and to connect a new extension organically to the existing building. The main building will be open to the south of the village so that villagers can experience the playground through an ecological garden. In addition, all sides of the school building will be enclosed by fences to separate entrances and areas, and access bridges at various levels for the access from its neighbours will increase connectivity with the building. The jurors commented, ‘The proposal is outstanding in that it tries to figure out how to form relationship between school facilities and surroundings, and between the courtyard and interior space.’ The main building is scheduled for completion in the second half of 2023 based on the proposal.
