On Aug. 5, the National Library of Korea of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism selected the ‘Timeless Corridor’ of Shinhan Architects & Engineers Co., Ltd. (principal, Kim Sanghoon) and D&B architecture design group (principal, Cho Doyeun) as the winning works in the international design competition for the construction of the National Library of Korea Data Preservation Center, Pyeongchang. The winning project proposed the International Broadcasting Center, an existing idle facility for the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, as a cultural space for residents and visitors. The plan is to convert it into various cultural programmes by designing a space to exhibit and experience digital materials using a wide and long corridor. As the design plan is faithful to its role as a national data preservation centre, it was evaluated as meeting the purpose of the remodelling. The jury judged, ‘Each of them showed a unique design concept despite the limited circumstances, so it took a lot of time for the judgement.’ Kim Jinwook, the chairperson of the jury, said, ‘The boldly presented front water space needs an alternative considering the environmental characteristics of the long winter,’ he added. The National Library of Korea Data Preservation Center aims to be completed in 2024.
