Moon Juho · Lim Jihwan · Cho Seunghyun (BOUNDLESS Architects), Leehong Kim (Leehong Kim Architects), and Jungmin Nam (professor, Seoul National University of Science and Technology) have been nominated for the Korean Young Architects Award 2018. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST) announced the 3 finalist teams on June 18 after going through preliminary screening and a second round of open presentations.
With the objective of maximizing the value of space, BOUNDLESS Architects focused on architectural design that actively utilized big data and artificial intelligence technologies.
Leehong Kim has experimented with the tension between the dynamic and static through projects of various scales including ‘DNA’ and ‘Cornerstone 1-532’. Jungmin Nam has conducted studies and designs on diverse scales regarding architectural design that can properly function in our present society, culture, and environment through projects like ‘Yellow Foot’ and ‘Flower+Kindergarten’. The judges commented that they ‘comprehensively assessed not just on the completeness of the constructed structure and space, and their critical thinking and problem-solving abilities as architects, but also the sincerity and future potential of the applicants’ architecture’.
In the case of BOUNDLESS Architects, the judges assessed that ‘they displayed a logical analysis of the circumstances and conditions responding to real estate development, and presented high-quality solutions and results’, adding that ‘it was impressive how they proposed the fundamental data to construct a building in a manner that can be shared with others’. Regarding Leehong Kim’s work, the judges praised ‘the architect’s scrupulous observation of the given environment and conditions, concepts, and tenacious working process that is not confined to the boundaries of a structure, all of which was noteworthy’. On Jungmin Nam, the judges assessed that ‘the architect had presented a solution for the space in between the public
and private as an industrialized entity’.
The award ceremony and exhibition will be held at the 2018 KIA Convention & Exhibition in Jeju island this October. The awardees will participate in a session where they will be able to explain their works to architecture officials, citizens, and students.
