On Feb. 28, the Seoul Metropolitan Government unveiled the blueprint for the Garak Wholesale Market Vegetables Bldg. 1 and Fish Market. Ever since it opened in 1985, Garak-dong Agriculture and Marine Products Market has led the domestic wholesale distribution of agriculture and marine products, but it has also pursued modernisation through projects that respond to changing and aging distribution networks. As the first phase of the project, Garak Mall was completed in 2015, and contracted to construct the Garak Wholesale District 1 Market Vegetables Bldg. 2, the second phase of the project was on track. This competition was held to initiate a new step in the construction of the Vegetables Bldg. 2 and Fish Market, which is District 2. The winning team is Haema Architects & Planners (principal, Jeon Gwonsik) + SIAPLAN Architects & Planners (principal, Cho Juhwan) + INO Architects (principal, Kim Heungsoo), and the proposal introduced a grid concept to create a futuristic space for the distribution, modular enclosure, and cultural space. As a result, the winning entry received positive reviews for its satisfactory functional solutions in transportation planning and environmental planning, in addition to being relatively specific in the modules and details of the store design.
